Exeter Road is 1.4 kms in length running from Maroondah Highway to Nangathan Way.

It is a road of many contrasts. A shopping strip and centre is at the Maroondah Highway end, including a Coles supermarket.

The first part of the road is level with well-established properties. Lychgates and picket fences are a feature of older houses.

Many gardens have landscaped areas between their set-back fence and the footpath, a more welcoming sign than just a fence, although a picket fence does look welcoming.

One attractive picket fence was overgrown by a large hebe bush in flower. A trio of flowering wattles will one day look magnificent when fully grown.

Camellias were showing of their colours as bright red flowers and a tree with its fallen petals at its base.

A distant splash of colour on a tree trunk festooned with over one hundred artificial flowers sought closer inspection. While I was photographing it, a passing neighbour said it was a memorial to a young lady who was killed there many years ago when her car struck that tree.

Birdbaths and a birdbath fountain were a feature in many of the larger gardens. Garden lamps adorned several tall brick fences. These seem to be a feature of large blocks with high front fences and the houses set well back.

It must be nesting season as a crow was seen gathering material. Magpies were out in force, often at ground level fossicking for food.

Many bushes of daisies were in full bloom as were the common small white variety that always seem to pop up in lawns between mowings.

Only a few azaleas were seen but there were many vinca ground cover plants in any gardens often growing among other plants.

A particularly beautiful sight was the top of a leucadendron bush, backlit by the sun, appearing over a fence.

Upon reaching Lyons Road there is a small shopping strip as the road becomes very undulating, with some very steep sections.

At the top of one steep section is Hochkins Ridge Floral Reserve. This large bush reserve has several walking paths throughout and is a mecca for wildflowers in springtime. It is a worthwhile diversion although some of the paths are steep and rough, but worth the effort.

Many dog walkers were out, both in the flat section and the hilly bits. Also about were several mothers taking their little ones for a walk in their pusher.

It is certainly a road of many colours, flower wise. A lovely pink rose was in flower as was some red hot pokers.

Jonquils and lilies were two white flowers with agapanthus were added a little colour.

Grevilleas and polygalas added to the colour as did honeysuckle vines.

At the Nangathan Way end is the Nangathan Way Reserve, which is a large grassed area with a playground.

Along this end of Exeter Road, it is very bushy with lots of trees. It was here that I saw some noisy miners and a rainbow lorikeet.

To walk this road and explore Hochkins Ridge Floral Reserve would be time well spent.
