For Brisbane residents a drive north to the picturesque villages of Montville and Maleny, both perched on the Blackall Range, are regular outings. Art Galleries, book stores, artisan retail outlet, and hiking paths abound.

Once you've had your fill I recommend a drive a little over fifty kilometres south west, through farmland and with gorgeous views of Mt Tibrogargan in the Glasshouse Mountains, to the little country town of Kilcoy.

Why Kilcoy?

Because The Exchange Hotel, just off the main road through the township at 13 William Street, dishes up the best steak I've eaten in twenty years. No fancy accoutrements; just a good old fashioned piece of meat that melts in your mouth and has been cooked over an open grill. You can't cook rump like this at home.

The Exchange Hotel is an imposing building that reeks of history. Indeed on one of the exterior walls the pub's history is proudly displayed, just as is the history of many of the other older buildings within the township, making it an interesting and easy self guided walking destination.

Originally built in 1901 the Exchange Hotel has undergone renovations as Kilroy has grown and yet has retained much of its olde world charm. The walls are adorned with photos from the past: the 1932 Show Society, timber cutters, and local members of the Light Horse Brigade. It is a fascinating peek into the past.

With no apologies to any vegetarian readers we opted for the 400 gram rump steaks with chips and steamed vegetables. Heaven on a plate.

The menu is quite extensive - see Hotel Kilcoy Menu. here - and even mid week the locals were bringing their families in for a meal. Friday Nights are big at The Exchange Hotel with their $15 Steak and Chicken Schnitzels Specials.

Lunches during the week are also popular with $15 specials, and during the chill of winter there is a welcoming fireplace that obviously gets a workout.

Bistro opening hours are as follows :

Monday to Thursday : 11:30 am till 2 pm
5:30 pm till 8 pm
Friday : 11:30 am till 2 pm
5:30 pm till 8:30 pm
Saturday : 11:30 am till 2:30 pm
5:30 am till 8:30 pm
Sunday : 11:30 am till 2:30 pm
5:30 pm till 8 pm
  • Note : Lunch Specials are not available during school holidays

  • Kilcoy is a small country town that packs a big punch and is not short on good old fashioned hospitality. So why not ditch the latte and travel those extra few kilometres for one of the finest steaks on offer. Then you can undertake the Heritage walking trail and walk it off. No guilt.
