This isn't something that you can do on a weekend, but I still recommend you checking it out. The Excelsior Hotel Glebe Open Mic is on every Wednesday, starting from 7:30pm. This event is suitable not just for those who enjoy listening to live acoustic music, but also for those who are looking to play at a venue without having to worry about such things as booking agents and meeting a quota for the number of people who attend your performance.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, the musicians are coming in again. I've been to the Excelsior Hotel Glebe Open Mic twice before (both times to play). The first time I went, I was overly eager, and therefore arrived there early. Unnecessarily, it turned out. I think only four or five people ended up playing on the night. The second time I went, I went there late, deliberately. Judging from the number of people who played last time, I decided to take my chances and decided to come late. What a mistake that was. The weather had warmed up significantly since the last time I went, and I guess with warmer hands, musicians are more inclined to go and try their luck at a venue.
You'll see an array of musicians at the Excelsior Hotel Glebe Open Mic, to be sure. You might see some musicians who are just starting out, or perhaps some regulars in the music scene who have come to have a care-free night, or perhaps some musicians who have decided to come back to the scene after a bit of a hiatus. Even though I've been there only twice, I've seen all of these types. Who knows, you might even see me without knowing.
In summation, if free live acoustic music sounds good to you, and if you're free on a Wednesday night, do check out the Excelsior Hotel Glebe Open Mic. You might truly witness some diamonds in the rough.
