My Smart Garden is presenting a series of online gardening workshops in celebration of National Tree Day 2020.
My Smart Garden is a free program with the aim of helping people to grow their own food in their garden, to shelter their home from the sun and wind, to create homes for local wildlife, to use water wisely, and to recycle garden waste.
All of the workshops are free but registering for the event you want to attend is required.
Storing and Preserving Your Garden Harvest

Water Smart Gardening

the role of garden zones and plant selection in Water Smart gardening
the characteristics of indigenous and exotic plants that love dry climates
the important role of soil in a Water Smart Garden and how you to improve soil's water holding capacity
meaningful mulch - types, how, when, pros and cons
capture and storage of rainwater
grey water - opportunities and what to be aware of
irrigation options, and
water-smart technologies.

Create a Habitat Garden

My Smart Garden's Create a Habitat Garden online workshop will teach you how to attract native wildlife into your garden. The purpose of a habitat garden is to "provide a stepping stone for native birds and animals to move safely across highly urbanised areas" and also provide a "place of beauty and calm" in urban areas. Learn how to attract birds, pollinators and reptiles to your yard in this workshop, which will also share information on native trees that are appropriate for small spaces.

My Smart Garden's Fruit Trees for Melbourne Backyards online workshop will share which fruit trees are perfect for Melbourne backyards. How to grow a bumper fruit crop on a regular suburban block will be explained by Scott Hitchins, a permaculturalist and sustainable living consultant who often presents sustainable gardening workshops for councils, schools and community groups. You'll learn how to select the best fruit trees for your garden by looking at the space available, the watering requirements, its soil type, yield, companion planting, and espalier options.

Beginners Guide to Growing Your Own Veggies

My Smart Garden's Beginners Guide to Growing Your Own Veggies online workshop will teach you how to grow your own fresh herbs and vegetables at home. Aimed at those who want to start growing their own food but don't know where to start, this workshop is for those with no prior knowledge or experience. It will cover the basics of vegetable patch design, soil fertility, watering, pest management, harvesting, and easy herbs and vegetable to grow. Low or no-cost organic methods will be emphasised and for renters and those in small spaces, growing in pots will be touched on too.

Although the My Smart Garden program is aimed at people living in the Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley City Council areas, those from other councils are welcome to attend these events, space permitting. The events are for Melbourne gardeners only, however, as gardening is very context-specific and any questions relating to other areas will not be answered.
My Smart Garden suggests contacting your council to find out what free sustainable gardening events are available locally if you live outside of Melbourne.
