Kapunda Bakery
Kapunda Bakery

Although the Kapunda Bakery, situated on Kapunda's main street, looks much like other bakeries upon entering, the immediate impression is also one of cleanliness, freshness and good organisation. Almost everything you see on offer is baked fresh on the premises and temptingly displayed. You can even order specialty birthday and wedding cakes.

The bakery also offers a bright, airy dining room where you can sit and enjoy a tea or coffee and a meal from a comprehensive menu. As well as a broad selection of pies and pasties including vegetarian options, the Kapunda bakery also offers a 'big breakfast,' a variety of soups, quiche, salads, rolls even a traditional pie floater. Then there is a long list of sweet treats including cakes, pastries, slices, ice cream and cool drinks.

What is not immediately obvious, though, on entering the bakery, is a flight of steps to your right that lead downstairs to the bakery museum.

Entry to the museum is free and the staff encourage you to wander down and enjoy the atmosphere of an olden-day bakery.

There are pots and pans and various implements, along with the original oven and fireplace. It's easy to imagine how difficult it must have been working in this kind of an environment with the heavy iron tools and pots; a stark difference to the roomy, bright shop upstairs.

Owner and manager, Tanya has been with the Kapunda bakery (formerly known as Master's Bakery) for about six years and also owns and manages the Eudunda bakery which has a history of its own.

The Eudunda site was once a bank back in 1890 but now has the same fresh, welcoming environment as its sister store in Kapunda. You will also see old wares on display here.
