"Eating in Italy is more than a way of satisfying your appetite, it's a way of celebrating living," say the founders of Etto, Dave Ansett, Stephane Meyer and Peter Singline.
Etto, on Claredon Street, South Melbourne, attracts many passerbys, especially with the bright colours, funky postcards and colanders for light shades and that's before you browse the menu. It's interesting, it's fresh and it's fun.
We went there on a weekday. It was bustling with not enough seats, although there are some outside. Staff are friendly and there are vegan and gluten free options on the menu .The idea is to pick the sauce, the type of pasta and then any accompanying dishes and they will make it up fresh for you.
We ordered a vegetarian caponata with penne, an Italian slaw and spicy Italian sausage with penne. They were all amazing. Especially the slaw, so light and fresh. We could see them making up the individual pasta dishes. The serving sizes are good, and the prices reasonable. Bambini are also catered for; they can have any pasta with sauce for $6.50.
Service was fast and friendly, and there were some interesting drinks, which were imported from Italy, to choose from also.
They have these cute postcards for you to pick up and pop on your fridge at home. Etto has such a lovely vibe. My only concern is the lack of seating; I am sure as word gets out people will struggle to find a seat.
