Feel good about your food, and not just because it's tasty
Located on trendy Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, Ethos Cafe is the kind of place with a large menu suited to all tastes. The pricing is reasonable and, true to their name, they are quite principled in how they do their business. Their 'ethos' includes using free range eggs and supporting local charities.
Ethos Cafe is reasonably large for a cafe, with plenty of indoor seating. It is a cosy venue with warm lighting and plenty of artwork, with price tags next to it if you're interested in picking up a painting with your coffee.
We ordered light meals off the breakfast menu, and were not disappointed. My dish of smashed avocado, served with chickpeas and cubes of feta cheese on toast was both filling and delicious. The french toast, which was actually bagel, served with ice cream and blueberries was also an interesting dish. Unique taste combinations seems to be a specialty of Ethos, with many of the menu items boasting a small twist on an old favourite. It was difficult to pick what to order as there was so many appetizing options, but I would definitely order the smashed avocado again next time.
Most breakfast dishes are under $15, and more substantial meals are available for around the twenty dollar mark. There is also a display cabinet of focaccias and cakes.
On another occasion, I ordered a hot chocolate. It is all about the small touches at Ethos. The hot chocolate was immaculately presented, dusted with cocoa and having two marshmallows on the side. It had a rich chocolate flavour, and was essentially everything you would expect when ordering a barista-made hot chocolate.
Service is reasonably fast, making Ethos an ideal destination for when you are starving and want food immediately. It could also be a convenient first date spot- if your date is awkward, at least you know it will be over quickly as you will not be waiting long for your food or drinks to arrive.
