We were celebrating a special Birthday so I looked around for that "Special Restaurant." I chose Esquire in Eagle St and we all loved the experience.
The Restaurant is tucked under one of the buildings on Riverside and you could just miss it as you walk down Eagle St. You walk in and there is a simplicity in the decor which appeals and also an open kitchen where you can see the chefs busily preparing all the dishes. There are some interesting bone skeletons of fish on the bench tops which immediately attract attention and questions. One part of the restaurant is slightly raised. There are some lovely views of Story Bridge but we found we were actually quite focused on the food in front of us.
We were shown to our table and basically apart from ordering the wine all the rest was done for us. I love that about a good restaurant. I love degustation menus as, if they are good, they will titillate your palate and awake sensations, with textures, tastes and smells.
I have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of their degustation menu. It was varied, surprising, delicious and appetising. The dishes, all nine of them, were beautifully presented and flawless. They were each accompanied by a full explanation of the content, the way it was cooked and where the ingredients were sourced from. The service was attentive without being fussy or snobby and the dishes arrived within perfect intervals - just enough time to savour the taste, sip some wine and chat before another delicious dish was placed down before us. Would we go again, certainly - sadly not as often as we would love as the price at $150 per person is not inexpensive but I can say that I thought it was good value and a great evening out.
The Restaurant is the only 3 hat Restaurant currently in Brisbane and was Restaurant of the Year 2013. It is owned by Chef Ryan Squires and his partner Cameron Murchison. They serve anything from 7-15 course menus. You just have to choose the one for you. They are open Tuesday through to Friday but only for dinner on a Saturday. For lunch the casual Esq menu is available throughout the restaurant and on Friday's a 4 course prix fixe menu is also available for those who still wish to enjoy a set menu.
