Who doesn't love coffee and alcohol?
Like most true Melburnians, I love and appreciate good coffee. I've been around the world and would go as far to say that when it comes to coffee, Melbourne does it best (oh I went there).
So what do you get when you mix coffee with liquors and spirits? Heaven. Or if we're going to call it by it's official name, an Espresso Martini. If you haven't had one of these yet you need to free up some time to do so. These drinks of godlike deliciousness are life changers and if you're looking for something to do this weekend (or even after work during the week) than consider one of these venues below. You can thank me later.
Please note: You will notice in my reviews of these establishments that I talk more about the bartenders than I do the specifications of the drink (what's in it, how they make it etc.) and there's reason for that. I believe that a good establishment relies on great staff, regardless of how good their food or drinks taste. I will return to a bar/venue solely based on my experience with staff because when I'm out spending money on cocktails, I want to feel welcomed immediately. That's why I harp on about the bartender I dealt with, so when you visit these places you can meet them too and hopefully walk away with the same experience!
Venue name: Less Than Zero Location: 153 Commercial Road, South Yarra. Atmosphere: Casual, social, meet your friends here for some drinks!
This venue has got character, sophistication and an unbelievable warmth about it. Nestled in a comfy spot on Commercial Road and only a short walk from either Prahran or South Yarra station, Less Than Zero oozes charm and I've got to admit that I'm slightly upset I've never been here prior to now. Their bartender (Josh) is an absolute champion, rocking a pretty suave man-scaped beard and I'm not even kidding when I say, this guy knows his fashion. He understands alcohol flavors and combinations and is most definitely the guy you want at all of your house parties. Why? Because the drinks he's going to serve up to you and your mates are going to not only blow your mind, they're going to high five your taste buds (again and again).
Less Than Zero - Espresso Martini
My rating on the Espresso Martini? 5/5 HOT TIP: On Friday nights they sell 2 for $20 Espresso Martinis until 10pm (you read that right), so be sure to put this in your calendar. Now.
Venue name:Captain Baxter Location: 10-18 Jacka Blvd, St Kilda Atmosphere: Summer, beach, Sunday sessions is the sunshine
Bartender Brad @ Captain Baxter
Nestled right next to the beach and with a gorgeous view of the water, this real estate allows for prime people watching. The venue feels like it belongs in Miami as it overlooks the boardwalk of St Kilda beach and it's interior reflects a watery, party environment. I can tell just by walking through the door that this bar has had it's fair share of big nights. Their bartender (Brad) dons a pair of glasses I have never seen before and begins making me what Captain Baxter calls 'their version of the Espresso Martini' – the 'Captains Espresso'. I'm told that this drink isn't on the menu and I can confirm after searching for it, that is correct. Another thing I'm made aware of is that the traditional Espresso Martini (vodka, Kahlua, espresso) can be made upon request and is regularly done in peak periods!
Captain Baxter - Captains Espresso
Rating on the 'Captains Espresso': 3.5/5 HOT TIP: This is a must visit summer hot spot, so be sure to put it in your diaries for the warmer weather.
Venue name:Kid Boston Location: 44 Chapel Street, Windsor Atmosphere: Chilled, sophisticated, intimate, a date night that'll impress!
Bartender Max @ Kid Boston
With just a two second walk from Windsor station, I might be a little bias in my love for this venue because it's in my neighbourhood. This place never fails to impress me. One thing I know for certain is that the owner of this establishment knows how to pick staff because they are all not only knowledgeable of their drinks, they're also really fun to talk to. You read that right people, bar tenders WITH personalities who don't judge you for ordering something standard, like a Vodka Lime Soda (which I'm notoriously guilty of). The Espresso Martini here is classic style and is served by the very talented, slicked hair (which he rocks) – Max. I could harp on about it but I don't need to – it's delicious.
Kid Boston - Espresso Martini
Rating on the Espresso Martini: 5/5 HOT TIP: The cocktail list at this place is scrumptious as is the food, reading the menu will really catch you by surprise and have you wanting to order everything. I recommend planning a long and lavish date night here or even a catch up with the girls!
So, what are you waiting for? Time to plan your next night out and get yourself one (or three) of these drinks!
