Due to all the new housing developments happening in Perth's far northern suburbs, some great play spaces have started being developed too, adding to the plenitude of great places to take your kids for free. One such park that we've recently been exploring is Escarpment Park, located just off Marmion Avenue in Alkimos.

This is a large play area that features some really funky play equipment with an abundance of climbing structures. This is a perfect one for little explorers, with some of the frames presenting a real challenge for those with a sense of adventure. At the top of the playground is a great wooden cubby house that you climb up into and swoosh down from on a tubular metal slide. I imagine that this cubby house would make an excellent fort for groups of young children playing together.

Away from the cubby house, there are a series of climbing areas which include rope and timber structures. The smallest of adventurers might find the rope frames a little tricky, so a helping hand might be required. Those over 3 should enjoy the climbing areas without too much assistance being required. I've seen a real mix of ages at the playground, and even the older kids (around 10) seem to get a lot out of the mixed age equipment.

Further down the playground, there is a swing area which includes a great baby swing, normal swing and one of the larger 'group' swinging seats which are a whole lot of fun if you've got a few little ones with you.

One of the great things about this playground is that it is large, and kids have lots of different zones to explore and play between. It's not enclosed, but it is well set away from the road, with grass and sand land as a go-between.

The playground features a soft sand floor to cushion any falls, whilst also providing a great play surface if you've brought any diggers and trucks with you.

Kids will enjoy the addition of the spinning frame, where they can climb aboard and get spun around for the ultimate in dizzy fun.

This is a great mixed age playground and would make a perfect place to host a kids birthday party or a family picnic. There are currently no toilets at the park which is a shame, considering the size of the play area and the fact that you could easily spend a happy morning in the park having a play and a picnic. There are picnic tables though, so if you are taking some food with you, there are some shaded areas.

If you're heading up north, this is a great park to considering stopping in at.
