This must be one of the Sunshine Coast's best kept secrets, which I hesitate to share as one would love to keep it as unspoilt as it is today. But if you're looking for a laid-back, secluded beachside holiday, then mosey off to Mudjimba.



This little coastal town (village) is surrounded by water - the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean on the one side and the Maroochy River on the other, offering so much to the holiday-maker - be it the expanses of beautiful beach for a relaxing holiday; searching for the proverbial perfect wave or the diving/snorkelling off Mudjimba Island (affectionately known by the locals as Old Woman Island), with its own Aboriginal dreamtime stories:-



The name Mudjimba refers to an aboriginal legend in which a woman became stranded on the island, where she lived into old age; and the second story refers to the creation of Mudjimba Island:- two men, one named Coolum and the other Ninderry fought over a woman called Maroochy. One day Ninderry knocked Coolum's head off and it landed in the sea, becoming Mudjimba Island (this is definitely my favourite of the two)!

A modern day story is that Sean Connery used to own the island when he was married to Australian actress, Diane Cilento in the 60's/70's and they spent quite a bit of time there during their marriage.



If you're into diving, one can view the coral gardens just off Mudjimba Island, starting at a two metre depth; when conditions are right, the surfing community class it as one of the best reef breaks in Australia.



Accommodation at Mudjimba includes up-market apartments, holiday resorts, self-catering apartments and even camping and is only 3.4kms from the Sunshine Coast airport.



So, as you can see, this has to be one of the Sunshine Coast's best kept secrets - why don't you mosey off down to Mudjimba…
