Escape from St. Hell: My Trans Life Levels Up is a 306-page graphic novel memoir written and illustrated by Lewis Hancox. It is a coming-of-age story about growing up, finding your own identity, and becoming an adult. It is the sequel to his 2022 Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel memoir, Welcome to St. Hell, which was about his childhood as a closest trans teen.

In my review of his previous book, I praised Hancox for his sense of humour, the love he has for his mother, and the open and honest way that he talked about being transgender. In Escape from St. Hell, Lewis is eager to leave his small home town to attend university, but his worried that people will not see him as a real man once he gets there. He has started taking testosterone but worries that it is not enough. He still doesn’t feel like a real man. His future self gently encourages him to figure out what it means to be a man by experimenting with different styles.

I really enjoyed reading Escape from St. Hell. I think that Lewis Hancox is a really good storyteller and illustrator. I like how he puts humour, warmth, and compassion in his books. I find stories like his to be really interesting. In Escape from St. Hell, he shares a lot of the anxieties he felt in the early days of his gender transition. He worries that he will never be able to pass as a man, satisfy a woman, or be able to follow the bro-code. He takes some missteps along the way but eventually discovers who he wants to be and learns how to feel comfortable in his body.
