The
Eryldene Historic House and Garden , a popular tourist attraction located in the Sydney North Shore suburb of Gordon, is hosting a
Volunteer Training Program this April, which is open to all and is particularly suitable to those with a keen interest in Australian history, fine arts and gardens. This is a unique opportunity to help conserve and present this heritage site to the wider public.
The Eryldene property was designed by the Australian architect William Hardy Wilson and it features a single story house, constructed in 1913, in the colonial Georgian style, with a garden which is often referred to as the 'spiritual' home of the camellia.
The Eryldene property does not receive any on going government funding, even though it is listed on the Australian Register of the National Estate and the New South Wales Heritage Register. Instead it is conserved by the Eryldene Trust and Foundation, which formed in 1979 and continues to rely on the support of the community.
There are a number of ways one can help the Eryldene Trust and Foundation continue to manage and present the attraction to the public, for example you can become a member of the Eryldene Trust and Foundation or become a Friend of the organisation by becoming a volunteer.
Currently Eryldene requires volunteers for a number of positions - these include joining the gardening team who help weed and groom the surroundings, or joining the team of staff in the garden cafe, gift shop and entrance desk on Open Weekends.
Eryldene also runs regular guided tours and volunteers can act as guides for tours in the house and in garden, as well as provide general assistance in administration and in maintaining the house and garden to museum standards.
If you are interested in becoming a Friend of Eryldene, take note of the upcoming free
which will run on
Saturday, 6 April and
Saturday, 20 April 2013 from
9.30 am to 3.00 pm on both days.
This two day event will feature fascinating talks with some members of the dedicated Eryldene Trust and Foundation and will give the public a unique insight into why Eryldene is one of Australia's most important historic properties and how the community can help preserve this site for future generations to enjoy.
If you wish to attend the
or would like further information on how you can help the Eryldene Trust and Foundation, contact the organisation on 02 9498 2271 or
