This climactic show will leave you gasping
In a word - brilliant! Helen Cassidy's show Erotic Intelligence for Dummies, which opened last night as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, is just that.

As the name of the show suggests, you need to approach it with an open mind, and expect adult themes throughout, as well as probing questions about your sexual predilections (in a 'safe' environment).

Cassidy commands the audience's attention from the first moment. Tiny framed but with a personality that's bigger than the room, Cassidy quickly takes things in hand - pun intended - and there follows an hour of wonderful, witty, smutty and exceptionally funny entertainment.

With a background as a classically trained actress and Gaulier-trained clown, it's perhaps no surprise that Cassidy has a depth of talents. Apart from her abilities as writer and performer of this show, she can sing a bit, dance a bit, is a master of the quick change (sometimes on stage), a ventriloquist and a 'sword swallower'.

To help her on her journey through this performance is a pile of plushies (plush toys to the uninitiated). Oh, and audience involvement. Quite a lot of audience involvement.

Helen starts her journey by taking the audience back to a time when she had a special relationship with her toy koala

Erotic Intelligence starts with a journey back through history to a time when Cassidy had a very special relationship with her toy koala - with the button nose. We progress through other scenes, such as a 'girl scout' type scenario where various animals are encountered. There is a particularly memorable scene that involves a snake (aka a pink sausage balloon). What Cassidy does with that snake will leave you - umm - open-mouthed.

Helen in the jungle - encounters various beasts

In another scene, Cassidy tests three audience members to make a decision about which of them she would be most likely to continue with 'after the seven-year itch'. The wedding scene that follows is hilarious.

But at the end of the day (and the show), it's all about inclusiveness, and in the big finale, the whole audience is drawn into the performance, in a wonderful way.

Erotic Intelligence is a clever, funny show, which is perfectly suited to Cassidy's many talents. Her performance is polished and professional.

This is the best show I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.
