I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.

The magnitude of
Lake Taupo is best appreciated from the water and the
Ernest Kemp is an experienced and comfortable craft having cruised there for over
35 years. The vessel is a comfortable boat with plenty of seating indoor and outside. There are toilets on board, free Wi-Fi is included as well as a brochure about the carvings and a free postcard of the vessel. Children are welcome to visit the skipper in the wheelhouse and receive a Wheel Certificate.

On the way to Mine Bay, pre-pizza drinks are offered, the skipper gave a short commentary about the lake but mentioned that the afternoon cruise was a more relaxed affair. The pizza was then served as well as more drinks.

On reaching the carvings, we spent a bit of time slowly cruising past so that all passengers could get a good look and take close up photos. Standing over 10 metres tall, the carvings were created in the 1970s by artist/sculptor Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and took over three summers to complete.

The
Ernest Kemp motored away into another sheltered bay so that other cruises could get a view then the chance to swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo was offered. A few adventurous souls took up the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The return trip was the chance for a tea or coffee and have a chat with fellow passengers and the cabin crew.
A Cocktail Cruise on the Ernest Kemp is a very enjoyable relaxing way to explore some of Lake Taupo's attractions.
