Erica is one of those small, "last stop before the big attraction" type towns. It's on the way to Mount Baw Baw and historic Walhalla , but this little town has plenty of its own history.

Despite the loss of its former industries, community spirit, and the local caravan park, are both thriving. On the day we arrive at , we are greeted warmly by hosts Trev and Bec. There are enquiries after the health of a family member who had to cancel their stay, and invitations to a cricket match the next day that will be, "a bit of a laugh."

Turns out the cricket match (on the adjacent town oval) is being organised by the caravan park and the local community. Bec assures me that the match will proceed despite the "stinking hot" weather forecast because the "day is all about fun." Local businesses and the Lions will all chip in for this CFA fundraising event. Of course, with the CFA will come a fire truck, "because no one is ever too old for a fire truck."

Being a long weekend, the caravan park is full. Most of the campers have come with their families, and, being a dog-friendly park, that means the four-legged family members are here too. It's only a small caravan park, so you don't have the over-the-top attractions of others, but there is a groovy indoor/outdoor bar where you can purchase or BYO drinks, fire pits, a multi-purpose concrete court, rec rooms, and plenty of barbeques.

There's a fun vibe to the park, and everyone sits around drinking and chin-wagging until 10.30 pm, at which point all noise abruptly ceases because the "no noise after 10.30 pm" rule is strictly observed.

From the caravan park, you are within easy walking distance of the Erica Hotel (serving hot rock meals and pub fare, just across the road), the Erica General Store, 1914 Cafe & Bar, and Erica Ski Hire. That's about it for the town, but it also makes a great base if you are planning to explore the walking, cycling, and mountain biking trails around the region. Just down the road, you will find the Walhalla Goldfields Rail Trail (which you can follow from Erica to Thomson) the Erica MTB Park , and Erica Mill Park. A little way out of town is the Tyers Junction Rail Trail .



The outer ring of the caravan park features flat, unpowered sites, while the middle rows have cute, denim blue cabins, and powered sites.

Our site bordered the neighbouring paddocks, giving us a peaceful outlook on grazing cattle and the rolling hills beyond.

The facilities at are clean, and easily cover the needs of everyone on this fully booked weekend (even with Covid-19 safety measures in place).

If you are looking for somewhere a little different to stay on your next trip, close to some spectacular attractions but tucked comfortably out of the way, then makes a great choice.
