Are you bored? Do you like writing, recreationally or professionally? If so, then perhaps spending your weekend writing a short story might be a fun thing for you to do!

There are plenty of awesome short story competitions you can submit your work to, and some of them even pay!

Sure, you may be thinking "Like my story would ever win a stupid competition", but let's face it. If you never try you'll never know! Plus, it's pretty awesome to write a story for fun, and then end up getting some money for it, or a spot of fame.
Here are some great competitions you can submit your stories to:

1. Life Lessons Essay Contest
Do you have any awesome life lessons to share? Ever had a 'mind-blown' kind of moment, where you suddenly realise how to fix a crucial life problem? If it's a yes, check out this contest.

Sure, it's not exactly a fictional 'short story', but it is sort of a personal short story!

If you are capable of writing a 1500 word essay, relaying your experiences in a fun and educational way, then perhaps give this contest a shot! You might even win it - Earning yourself a handsome $3000 prize!

2. L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest
Submissions must be short stories of up to 17,000 words, focused on science fiction or fantasy themes.

This is one of the more prestigious competitions you can enter on this list, and prizes are awarded every three months. The amount you can win varies from $500, $750, $1,000 or up to the annual grand prize of $5,000

3. Drue Heinz Literature Prize
$15,000 is up for grabs via the University of Pittsburgh Press, if you can produce a collection of short stories or a couple of novellas, or a combination of both.

The word count isn't an exact one. But generally, this contest prefers around 150-300 pages of content.

4. Field of Words Writing Competitions
This contest requires a payment of $20-$10 via PayPal - I know, it's pretty annoying. But, as far as I can tell, that payment helps to provide the prizes YOU could win, ranging from $75-$250 for flash fiction pieces (500 word stories), $200-$750 for short stories.

Entering into this competition also has more incentive than just possible prize money - your stories will also be promoted through various social media channels.
Whether or not you win anything from the above competitions, at least you can always say you were productive this weekend, and you created a little imaginary world of your own.

Put a bit of your sweat, blood, and tears into your short story; It can be jovial, contemporary, horrifying, or surreal - either way, whatever it is, it's yours to mould and shape however you darn well please.
