The Queen's Birthday is a public holiday celebrated in most Australian states and territories on the second Monday in June, making for a much-looked-forward-to long weekend.

The Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 but her birthday is celebrated on a separate date. In Britain, the monarch's birthday was always celebrated on the actual date until 1936, the year of the death of King George V, Elizabeth's grandfather. His birthday was 3 June and the date has since stayed around early June.

So how can you make the most of this celebration?

The Queen's Birthday long weekend is the official start of the snow season in the high country regions of New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania. You can start dusting off your skis and heading to the Snowy Mountains: Perisher Valley Thredbo, Charlotte Pass or Selwyn Snowfields. All of them are part of the Kosciuszko National Park. You can find info about accommodations and how to get there on their website

Football also features on the Queen's Birthday. Since it's first season in 1897, the Victorian Football League (now the Australian Football League – AFL) has always played football on the holiday. If you are a football fan, don't miss the opportunity! Buy your tickets on the AFL website , take a bird to Melbourne and be part of the history.

If you just want to stay in Sydney you can enjoy the Vivid Festival , where the city is once again transformed into a spectacular and huge canvas of light, music and ideas from 6pm.

Also the weather is perfect for taking the Eastern coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee and connect with nature.

And when at home watching TV, don't miss out The Honour List, which is announced every Queen's Birthday day and includes people who have received the Order of Australia and other special honours including the Conspicuous Service Cross, Conspicuous Service Medal and much more people proudly to serve and help in this Country.
