Find out about the cultural side of Bondi
Enjoy Bondi History Walks are being held on Sundays throughout July as part of the Bondi Winter Magic program.
The name Bondi originates from the Aboriginal word 'Boondi', which was used to describe the sound of water breaking over rocks.
Having become a popular spot for beach-goers as far back as the late 1800s. It wasn't long before it became the focal point of demonstrations by people opposed to 'indecent' beach attire - it seems they must have lost the battle well and truly if the topless bathers of today are anything to go by!
The suburb become home to many waves of immigrants over the years, bringing with them a rich cultural tapestry that has been woven into every corner of Bondi.
According to the organisers, participants will discover Bondi's bohemian past on these fascinating guided walking tours around the hidden gems of Bondi Beach. Led by Local Historian Sophia Smiley and 'Mr Bondi' himself, long-term resident Lawrie Williams, the walks are guaranteed to intrigue and delight.
Meet up at 9:45am for a 10am start.
