1 in 10 Women Will Experience Endometriosis in Their Life
Endometriosis is one of those diseases that we hear very little about but which is absolutely devastating to those who suffer. A common disease, endometriosis involves tissue which is similar to the lining of the womb, growing outside of the womb and in other parts of the body.
Generally linked with low fertility, up to 10% of women will suffer with endometriosis at some point in their lives and while it most often affects the reproductive organs, it is also often found in other organs such as the bladder and bowel and has even been found in the muscles, joints, lungs and brain.
It has been reported that endometriosis has a cost to Australian society of $7.7 billion each year with two thirds of this being in lost productivity with the remainder being direct healthcare costs. However, much more is needed to help the fight against endometriosis and to raise funds and awareness.
