The works consist of particular gestures undertaken with the camera, which accentuate the corporeal dimension of vision, and play upon the seductive process of identification at stake in the image. Video works with rhythmic and cyclic structures are generated through the employment of restricted movements and serial processes. In testing the limits of the photographic apparatus, the works seek to expose the aleatory and precarious condition of subjective experience.
Stephen Palmer is an artist and writer based in Melbourne. He recently completed a PhD in Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, which examined the nature of perception in the writings of Samuel Beckett. He has taught, predominantly in Art Theory, at universities in Melbourne. Recent exhibitions include Vexed Appendix (George Paton Gallery), Hesitation (BUS Projects) and Faux Novel (RMIT Project Space). He was a facilitator of Light Projects ARI, Northcote.
