It's only about one week until school begins and this could be a good time to notice the focus your kids are taking. We only get one day at a time and if they're nervous about the start of school, it might be time to shift their focus. Or maybe they're just getting a bit bored and you are running out of ideas to keep them occupied at the end of the Christmas holidays. To these ends, here's a list of 10 things to try.

Take the family along to the
Toowoomba City Library for one of these events.

A charming little park with two playgrounds, a rotunda, gas bar-b-que, shady spreading boughs and a picnic table. Situated on the corner of West & Stephen Sts. If you're in Highfields the Peace Haven Botanic Park play area is outstanding at 56 Kuhls Rd.
Busking
If it's not out of their reach, build your children's performance confidence and community engagement. It only takes a day or two to receive a
council busking permit . It doesn't have to be instrumental. Take note of all the rules. Go along to encourage them. Making money will bring an extra confidence boost.
Play Acting
Kids are said to be natural actors. Find a favourite story, adapt a short script and encourage them to dress up and act it out. Voice projection practice and voice creation will enhance their experience. Take care to give only constructive feedback. They could even write the script themselves.
Swimming
Milne Bay Aquatic & Fitness Centre has a children's pool, laps, indoor, outdoor, plus spa and sauna. Situated 43-49 Victoria St, a short walk from Grand Central Shopping Centre. On-site parking. Contact 07 4688 6330, open 5:30am - 9pm Mon - Fri, till 7pm Saturdays. Fees apply.
Photography
Already experts with a mobile phone, try giving the kids of few extra tips and send them on a photo expedition. Teach them how to look for photo bombs, perhaps use the 'golden section', get the best lighting and find the emotional moment to capture. Here's a short
video for beginners.
Round the House
Make domestic lessons fun and a bonding experience. Try tasting new spices for a yuk or yum reaction and ask them to guess what kind of foods they might work with. Have a go at new cooking ideas for cakes and biscuits. Making bread could be great fun plus create a delicious aroma in the home.
Self Discovery
What do they like? Who are they? As an easy starter, get them to write down their favourite sights, flavours, smells, textures, colours, sounds and anything else you can think of. Give them each a journal for keeping their lists. For an extra twist, prompt them to find the positives in their siblings. They could even write a loving letter to each other. What a great harmonizer.
Good Ol' Reading
Kindle or paper, reading is a great way to get them ready for another term. To add creativity, they could draw a picture to match the story.
The Book Tree bookstore has an excellent children's section if you're looking for new stories.
