Get ready to feast your eyes on something unique
Head to the Mosman Art Gallery between Saturday 3 May and Sunday 13 July for their exclusive textile exhibition - Encounters With Bali: a collector's journey.

Curated by an expert in Indonesian art and textiles, Dr. Siobhan Campbell, the exhibition features Indonesian textiles from the collection of Dr. John Yu AC and the late Dr. George Soutter AM.

Textiles play an important role in the lives of the Indonesian people socially, spiritually and economically. They symbolise its rich cultural heritage and come in various forms. The designs are complex featuring intricate motifs connected with ancestors, fertility, social status and fabulous wealth.

It all began in the late 1970s, when a blue cloth from Eastern Indonesia caught John Yu's eye in a Sydney gallery. This is followed by a thirty year period of travelling to and from Indonesia visiting various antique and art shops. Bali became Yu and Soutter's annual holiday destination as it is the heart for cloth trading and the Balinese fabric traditions are so rich and diverse there. They were drawn to Bali, its art and culture of the people and in time, have developed an appreciation for the astounding Indonesian textile traditions.

The exhibition showcases both Ikat and Batik cloths and several objects, some of which are very old and scarce. It will be a splendid sight with many cloths dating back two hundred years and others fresh from the looms. The pieces have been carefully chosen for this exhibition and represent characteristics of textile production from different provinces in Indonesia.

Visitors will also gain an understanding of Indonesia's arts, get a glimpse of Yu and Soutter's thirty year journey, and explore the tastes of two individuals. Furthermore, the exhibition also shows Yu and Soutter's passion and enthusiasm for Indonesian textiles, many of which have never been publicly exhibited.

This is your unique opportunity to get up close and personal with what is arguably Indonesia's most significant form of artistic expression. Who knows? It might ignite your passion for art traditions of our Asia pacific neighbours, but will definitely inspire, fascinate, and captivate.
