Fresh country air and an unhurried amble amongst the stringybark gum trees is the kind of experience you can expect at the
Emu Plains Market in Balnarring. It's a lovely rural setting in which to enjoy some unique and unusual shopping, stock up the fridge and pantry and perhaps munch on a few treats as you go along.
This is a friendly family and community oriented market with a focus on environmental sustainability and promoting the region and the products of "the Peninsula and Melbourne's best makers, growers, collectors and creators". Running from October to April on the third Saturday of the month, the next market will be held on October 19th from 9.00am until 2.00pm.
Gourmet food and wine are of course staple products of the Mornington Peninsula and there is a terrific array of both available (including wine tastings). Fresh produce is a highlight and along with fruit and vegetables, there are eggs, cheeses, cakes, biscuits, teas, preserves, jams, olives, pasta, cured meats and meats. For something to snack on while you're there the range is staggering. Think Mexican food, healthy food, seafood, pizza, dim sims, scones, cupcakes and macaroons to name just a few of the edible delights on offer.
It's not only about food though, delectable as it is. There's also plants, clothing, jewellery, retro, vintage and hand crafted items. With more than 140 stalls you're sure to find something irresistible to take home.
Resident band Whisky Gypsy will be on hand to provide music while you wander.
The kids can enjoy jumping castles, pony rides, a roving magician and Faery Emma who offers face painting, henna and beading.
