Hailing from Melbourne and having toured around the world spreading joy and laughter through her comedy shows and stand-up routines, our Australian superstar Emily Tresidder is returning from her two-year hiatus from the comedy scene by diving straight into the wonderful world of the Adelaide Fringe season.

With a flair of storytelling in a way that will delight audiences, whilst also juggling the more poignant points of her milestone events, Emily's new show Where'd You Go aims to make her audiences feel empowered, embraced (in a socially distanced manner), and of course - thoroughly entertained!

In anticipation of her new show coming to our beloved Adelaide Fringe festival, I caught up with Emily virtually and chatted about the essence of her show - have a read of our exchange below:

Tema: Hey Emily - lovely to e-meet you. How are you going?
Emily: Lovely to meet you too! I'm actually really well, all things considered! I've recently started as the co-host of JOY Drive (94.9FM here in Melbourne) - an opportunity I am so grateful to have been given! I'm also gearing up to perform this show and I'm thrilled to be back and so keen for people to see it. Plus I got a cookbook that exclusively features potato recipes for Christmas, so I am LIVING.

Tema: Can you please tell us a bit about yourself - what's your story?
Emily: I'm a Scorpio, my favourite colour is purple and I love a good turtle (or a bad turtle, just any turtle). Just playing, though all of those things are true. I am a comedian, radio presenter and podcaster (who isn't?!) from Melbourne. I spent 5 years touring stand-up comedy - both nationally and internationally (Edinburgh Fringe, Malaysia etc). Then I took some time off to figure out what I was doing with my life (spoiler alert, I still don't totally know - who does?!). I now host radio 5 arvos a week for JOY 94.9 and am ready to have my John Farnham moment.

Tema: How long have you been in the performing arts industry for and what has the experience been like so far?
Emily: I guess 7 years, 5 pursuing stand-up nationally and internationally, plus an overlap with radio while I was doing that. Though to be honest, I've been performing since I was a kid, I made an INCREDIBLE Noah (synthetic beard and all) with an ark when I was 5. I have always had a passion for performance and have always been involved with it somehow. I started in sketch comedy, and toured with a troupe to the UK and around Australia. I then toured stand-up and have been pursuing radio for the last few years. I also have an interview program called 'How Do You Do That' which was CBAA Award-nominated in 2021 and co-host the drive program. I loved performing and as I mentioned, have always been passionate about it. I think the arts scene is generally such a hard industry to crack and I think it is so easy to feel defeated or doubt yourself and your craft. My career thus far has really been incredible in both good and bad ways, and I guess that's what this show is about. It has been so valuable for me to take a step back and remember what it is I truly love about what I do.

Tema: Would you like to share with us about your hiatus from comedy? Why did you take a break and how was it for your personal development?
Emily: I think I didn't realise at the time, but I had kind of fallen out of love with my craft. I was drowning in self-doubt and really poured all of my soul and energy into and burnt myself out. I had an amazing weekend of shows in Kuala Lumpur and I think I thought 'okay, retire now, it doesn't get better than that'. I'm back because after some travelling, some great conversations and new connections, I remembered what it is about comedy I love. I missed the connections formed with audiences, the feeling of making a whole room laugh, and most importantly I figured out I have WAY more to say.

Tema: So let's talk about your show - could you please give us a brief snippet of what it's all about?
Emily: It has been a terrible few years for travel and feeling connected. My aim is to combine those things and have people giggling while we do it. I'll be taking audiences on a round the world trip that will only take an hour, and I won't even weigh their carry-on luggage! The show is about the places that I've been to and that have allowed me to be where I am (some actual countries, but also some destinations that can only usually be found in our minds).

Tema: What can audiences expect from your show?
Emily: Expect a bunch of things you've never seen before and some overpriced airline food. I'm bringing you my unique brand of comedy - it's engaging, it's poignant and it's funny.

Tema: What are you hoping for your audiences to experience from attending your show?
Emily: I hope people walk out giggling, but also feeling positive and ambitious. I hope that people walk out having truly been on an adventure without leaving their seats. I hope they connect to some of the fundamental parts of being human and LOVE the show. I have come out of retirement to bring them this show, because I have never been more keen to share something! HAVE FUN! Live, laugh, love (laughs) all of that.

Tema: How are you feeling about being involved with the Adelaide Fringe and returning to Adelaide?
Emily: Oh my goodness!! I am so excited! I truly don't think there isn't anything like Adelaide Fringe in Australia, and you know what, even the world. It is absolutely fantastic to have so many amazing, wonderful, unique artists in one place. I'm so thrilled to be performing at Rhino Room - it has always been a dream of mine.I am so looking forward to getting back in the game and performing this show, it's so much fun. I am also so excited to see other shows while I am there. If the last few years have taught us anything, there really is nothing like live performance. It can't be beaten!

Tema: Is there anything else that you'd like us to know about you and your show?
Emily: It's been a while since I've been in Adelaide and I would really love to see as many of you as possible! Bring some mates, bring a work colleague who insists you do something socially but you really don't have much in common with (it's stand-up, I'll do the talking, you'll barely have to speak to each other). Or just bring yourself, it'll be worth it!

Emily Tresidder will be performing her show Where'd You Go? at the Rhino Room from on February 18th and 19th, followed by March 1st - 4th, 2022. Tix can be purchased here .
