After a year of ups and downs and unexpected events, I was looking for somewhere to go over the Christmas break that would recharge my batteries. I love both the bush and the ocean, and I was fortunate to find both at in Hervey Bay.

Hervey Bay is approximately three and a half hours from Brisbane along the Bruce Highway and via the historic town of Maryborough .

As I drove into Emeraldene Inn, large palms and trees lined the driveway and joined overhead making a beautiful canopy of green foliage with the sun's rays filtering down upon my car. I immediately felt calm and knew this would be the right place for my break. The Lodge is surrounded by two acres of tropical gardens, which are full of native birds and some wildlife. An information booklet in the unit shows photographs of the birds that can be seen in the area and if you ask Reception, they can loan you pair of binoculars to view the birds up close.

This is a family-owned business that has won many Tourism Awards and TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Awards for seven years as well as the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence from 2011 to 2019.

Although my unit could have accommodated a family, I was more than happy with the spacious and modern air-conditioned rooms with a kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and tea/coffee-making facilities. Each unit has an LCD TV and a DVD Player and every surface and flooring were immaculately clean. What I really liked about my unit was that the toilet was separate from the bathroom with the latter being large enough to allow me the space to leave my toiletries bag on the side of the vanity.

Both the front and back of all units have a private patio where guests can sit and read or relax with a cuppa. The Lodge also has free Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, BBQ facilities and wooden tables and chairs around the area to enjoy fun times with the family. Just like motels, the Lodge offers breakfast, snacks and frozen meals at individual prices and if you do not have time to wash your dishes, the staff will do this for you for an extra $10.00. Laundry services are also available at a cost.

I have been told that is a favourite for travelling doctors and those requiring accommodation close to the Fraser Coast Hospital as the Hospital is just across Urraween Road. The Lodge is also located five minutes-drive from large shopping centres, the beach, restaurants and the airport is a mere twelve-minutes' drive away. Facilities for disabled guests and airport shuttle are available on request.

The reception desk can provide information on whale watching tours (when in season) and can book these as tours to K'gari (Fraser Island) and Lady Elliot Island.

I would have liked to stay a couple more days; however, this very popular Lodge was booked out. I will definitely return as the accommodation is so central to everything you would want in Hervey Bay, but booking ahead is the right option for the period you wish to stay.

is situated at 166 Urraween Road, Hervey Bay.
