At EVB you will journey into an Italian bakery from heaven
Emerald Village Bakery 30 years old - Photos Tricia Ziemer
The taste of Italy has found village life in Emerald and thrived within its community for over 30 years. Natalie, the daughter of the Italian family that created it, has kept the business building from strength to strength and moved it from a tiny shop to the huge busy hub it is today, according to the Manager, Barbara. You will find this popular hub at the Emerald Village Bakery (EVB is the new logo and look).
EVB Emerald Village Bakery bigger better and yummier
Remember the days of your Grandmother's kitchen wafting with the smell of fresh lasagna, carbonara, or linguini. You will find these dishes and much more at EVB every day of the week. As you enter the bakery you are surrounded by fridges full of food ready to take home and instantly bake for the perfect dinner. There are risottos, pizzas, zucchini slices, focaccia's logs to share, bruschetta's and calzones. There are full vegetarian choices as well.
There is daily fresh bread of both Italian and Australian variety. The options are endless. You could eat Italian meals for two weeks and each meal would be different and delicious. And you would save on your food bills as well with the cost of produce right now.
All are freshly made and wrapped ready for you to drive home and either pop in the oven or microwave. I enjoy cooking, but I would much prefer to be driving through the leafy Dandenong Hills enjoying the views versus spending hours in the kitchen some days. Two treats instead of one, stunning views and dinners done.
Partners, give your home chef a break; tell them to put up their feet because you can drop in here to sort all you need. Just have them light the candles and set the plates. These instant home-cooked meals are rich and nutritious and ready to dish up without all the messy pots and cleaning up required.
Once you find this café you will want to bring a small freezer bag or cooler, fill it up, eat three nights fresh and freeze the rest to be there on demand. Most people walk out with boxes and bags. I did this week.
And the serving tubs are large, so it feeds several for between $10.00 to $15.00. You can't even buy the ingredients for these prices.
You can get 5 meals for two for $50.00. That is dinner for 5 days. Take a week off cooking. We are renovating the kitchen right now and this shop has been my parachute. All I have is a small electric induction plate, microwave and rice cooker. So we can create simple meals but EVB meals are champagne deluxe on a beer budget. Which I then apply to renovations.
And if you have an allergy, you can ring three days ahead and they will make it just for you without the things you are allergic to. They are even working on a book of all the ingredients in all the dishes. So you can check what is in every dish. Watch out for that coming soon.
Each yummy dish is as fresh as fresh can be. Delectable tastes of Italy to die for bringing back memories of family fun dinners with fine wine on warm breezy nights under rustling trees with a lace table cloth, warm fresh bread and newly churned butter. Just add a fresh salad and the mandolin and the perfect evening is created.
There is almost always a line of eager people as the food is so fab and the word is out. But everyone is patient and served quickly and efficiently with helpful staff managing the counters and making up special coffees. You can even order coffee out the window and avoid going into the crowds, But you won't; the food is too tempting. Bet you go in.
And sweets, sweets, sweets, such as almond cookies, slices, tiramisu, cakes and tarts. They must have over 100 Italian and Australian sweets that would tempt any sweet tooth. And they celebrate with seasonal treats.
Ever had a Red Velvet. Intrigued? Start driving now. And the chocolate muffins are mouth-watering bombs of chocolate mud. I had a friend who always decided on her dessert before she decided on her main, to make sure she would fit both. Don't bother; just have one of their monster muffins. It will fill you up. It's big enough.
And at Christmas time it fills with all those delicious Christmas tarts, cakes, minces, puddings and gingerbread. The kids love to come and explore and browse 'uhhh and ahhh' and leave happy after begging for a treat. If you go Christmas Light Driving, make this a must stop and pick up your dinner and treats to share Christmas Day. It is as magical as the North Pole.
You are also close to the stream train, Puffing Billyso you can enjoy a train ride to Emerald Lake Park and back to Belgrave and then drive 12 minutes to Emerald and picnic in the park after you shop at EVB. You will leave with bags and belly bulging with goodness.
This is the most popular lunch spot in the area and tradies and workers drive out of their way because EVB always have the best hot food going including egg and bacon rolls with hollandaise sauce - my favourite, pizza's, calzones, hots pies, chicken burgers, pasties and sausage rolls. The list of hot goodies goes on and on.
These are fresh, filling morsels of delights that are far above what fast food outlets shove out the window and advertise with fancy pictures that the food never matches. You know who I am talking about. Drive a little bit further and get lunch nirvana.
My fav roll with hollandaise is only $8.50. It has fluffy bread roll, two eggs, two lots of bacon, melted cheese and hollandaise. You are not getting this out of a fast food window and if you could find something this nice it would be more like $12.00.
On this trip I walked out with dinner for two, muffins for 6, plus my, for in the moment, egg and bacon roll for $38.50. That is less than $4.00 per person.
And they love to make up High Teas to share, sandwich trays for events, or boxes for romantic picnic lunches. They also deliver these including family pies. See their website for their delivery specials and see their Facebook page for daily treats.
Celebrating footie biscuits - take some to the game
I was so lucky to find this shop. It saves me cooking on many nights after long tiring days and I am still giving my family the best of the best of home recipe's straight from authentic Italian trained Chefs. Also rare these days, the manager explained, "Everything is created in house".
Right now EVB is looking for a Pastry Chef. If you want to live in the stunning Dandenongs and travel just a few minutes to work, contact them quick.
I think it's time to head for treats at EVC again. Writing this article has made me crave EVC.
