"The good things in life are family, friends, good food & wine, books you can't put down & as much travel as you can cram in."
Published August 24th 2011
For a perfect day out with the family, or a cozy picnic for two, Emerald Lake is a great destination for a quick week-end getaway. Located approximately an hour's drive east from the CBD, Emerald is set in rolling green hills, truly living up to its name.

The lake is also one of the stopping off points for the famous steam train 'Puffing Billy', so if you feel like combining a train trip on this historic locomotive with your picnic, hop on board at Belgrave. The train runs every day of the year except Christmas Day. Timetables & prices can be found here.

Whether you arrive by car or train, there are numerous walking tracks and trails to enjoy at the park. Bicycles are welcome, too, if you want to amp up the fitness levels. Speaking of which, the park not only has playgrounds for the children, there's also one for adults, complete with outdoor gym equipment.

After your workout you can either enjoy your own sandwiches or buy something to eat from the quaint little lakeside cafe. Save some of your crusts to feed to the ducks as you stroll along the many pathways.

If it's a particularly nice day I can recommend having a paddle boat ride. You know, the self propelled type with huge wheels that you paddle like crazy without seeming to get anywhere. Lots of fun though and it really gives you a good work out just in case you need it after all that cycling and walking.

Take your camera too and you will be guaranteed of taking some memorable photos, there's lots of native birds and beautiful flora.

You'll be too tired to make dinner of course so on your way home stop at one of the many good quality restaurants that the Dandenong Ranges has to offer.

I wonder if they still have the huge model train set up there?

Apparently they do! I didn't see it but it's on the Emerald Lake Park website. A reason to go back with the kids, they'd love it. Thanks for mentioning it.
