Just because it's winter, doesn't mean you need to hibernate these July school holidays. Grab your woolies and embrace Melbourne's cooler months because there's a whole bunch of family fun ready for you to partake in thanks to the following activities:

The Big Freeze Festival in Fountain Gate

After last years' epic winter extravaganza, The Big Freeze Festival returns to Melbourne's South East this July, setting up camp at Fountain Gate.

The Big Freeze Festival is a 9 day event offering all the fun of the snow, in a huge undercover, indoor Big Top.

This year, the Big Freeze Festival will be divided into two areas the ticketed winter precinct featuring snow play, snowball toss, snowfall forest, winter village, snow globe photo booth, polar bear slide, kids' active challenge, circus skills workshop, construction play, art'n'craft activities and two brand new snow slides (at two different heights to allow more children to enjoy the thrill of the ride).

The Community Precinct will be free for the general public to visit and hosts daily stage shows, activity zone with Phillip Island Nature Parks, sports with Milo, food vendors and more.

Where: Under the Big Top at Fountain Gate Shopping (cnr Princes Hwy & Brechin Drive)
Time: Winter Festival sessions run three times each day. Community Precinct open from 9am 5:30pm daily

River Rink at Fed Square

Get your skates on and head to Federation Square in the heart of the city for an ice skating session on the River Rink. This pop-up ice rink opens 1 July and runs until 23 July.

The River Rink mirrors outdoor skating sessions you see in the Northern Hemisphere, giving you a 'Christmas in July' feel with fairy lights, food trucks and skating after dark to the latest tunes.

Cute 70cm high penguin skating aids are available for hire to assist your little skaters to give them the support and confidence they need to enjoy this uniquely Melbourne winter experience.

Eureka Skydeck's Ice Slide in Southbank

Eureka Skydeck's Melbourne Ice Slide returns to Southbank this winter, with a huge 36-metre long, four-metre high ice slide complete with imported Canadian inflatable ice tubes and specially designed lanes of two.

Opening to the public on 1 July, just in time for the winter school holidays, Eureka Skydeck's Ice Slide is Melbourne's first and only outdoor giant slide, taking three days to set up using a fine misting system at -12 degrees.

A portion of the Ice Slide funds will go to not-for-profit organisation Variety: The Children's Charity.

Winter Wonderland Event in Williamstown

Wintry family fun is afoot in Williamstown for two days this July, with an entertainment program planned for The Shed at Seaworks.

The Winter Wonderland Event in Williamstown will include a snow forest, a real snow play area, a giant winter slide, spinning chair lift, climbing wall, snowboard rider, snow globe, face painting, giant jingo, art space, a photo booth, winter themed food and entertainment as snowflakes falling from the sky.

This is an opportunity for your kids to see their much loved characters from Disney's Frozen, live on ice.
