Embrace Kids: Meet the Filmmaker Q&A Event

This is a line I will never forget from the film Bridget Jones - where Colin Firth, as the lawyer Mark Darcy, was telling Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) he liked her just the way she was - no need to diet, no need to change makeup or clothes - he was accepting her for what she looked like and who she was.

And what an important message that is for so many young people in our world who obsess with body image and social media manipulation. And it is not just the young who are suffering. Many people around the world have a reason not to be happy with the way they look.

We are not all perfect whatever that might represent. There is no such thing thank goodness and we can all embrace who we are and what we are and so it is with great pleasure and some anticipation that I can share with you all the screening of Embrace Kids at Palace Barracks on the 28th of August 2022 together with a Q &A to follow the screening with Taryn Brumfitt.

The background to this wonderful initiative is that Embrace is a compelling documentary about body image and how we feel about ourselves. Nominated for the Documentary Australia Foundation Award for Best Documentary, Embrace has been seen by millions of people across the world and has become a life-changing experience for so many.

"The inspiration for Embrace the documentary came about in 2013 after I posted an unconventional before-and-after photo that sparked an international media frenzy. The image, which embraces body diversity, was seen by over 100 million people worldwide and led to hundreds of interviews and articles. But I soon realised how restrictive 4-minute TV interviews, 800-word articles and 140 characters on Twitter can be. This issue needed a louder voice on a bigger platform, so the idea of creating the documentary Embrace was born."

Director of Embrace
Founder of the Body Image Movement

There followed a kickstart campaign which was very successful and the documentary was released in 2016. Since that moment, she has never stopped working towards making improvements to how people view themselves and there is so much on offer.

In Embrace Kids she's talking to school-aged kids and famous friends about body image, bullying, gender identity, advocacy, representation and more. Featuring Taryn's network of well-known celebrity friends including Celeste Barber, Jameela Jamil, Electric Fields, along with Chico the family dog, Embrace Kids brings together a vibrant collection of stories and voices to entertain and inspire kids and parents alike, showing us that the first step in changing the world, is changing your own mind.
