Ema - Film Review (Moro Spanish Film Festival 2021)
When I see a trailer for a film, and it screams 'quirky', I am very keen to watch it, as I did with
Ema.
This is part of the 2021 Spanish Film Festival, is directed by Chilean director, Pablo Larrain, of
Jackie fame, and starts Chilean movie actress, Mariana Di Girólamo as Ema, along with the very popular and talented Mexican actor, Gael García Bernal.
A couple adopts a child and everything goes awry as their family begins to fall apart. Ema decides to take matters into her own hands while trying to overcome her guilt in ways that could be deemed 'self-destructive', but she is really trying to find herself.
She has a plan at work and is very skillful at executing it, making sure all the pieces of the plan fit perfectly.
There are some stunning dances in this film, some of which I found rather indulgent, or trying to promote 'reggaeton' over other Latin dances. They were quite entertaining though.
This film has been nominated for a number of awards in international film competitions and is definitely one not to be missed, just for its quirky story, which may be seen as ludicrous by many.
Peculiar, strange, unconventional, and very off-centre.
