The many facets of a young Elvis Presley
After a successful national tour in the US, UK and Europe, the Smithsonian Institution is finally bringing Alfred Wertheimer's 56-prints photographic exhibition of a young Elvis Presley down under, right here at our very own National Portrait Gallery. A struggling freelance photo journalist in the 1950s from New York City, Alfred was hired and given the assignment to document the every facet of the 21-year old newly signed recording artist. Like a wingman, he would tag along on the rising superstar's everyday grind - be it during concerts, road tours, recordings, and even at his own private home, away from the public eye.
This special exhibition, Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer, was put up in celebration of Elvis Presley's 75th birthday, with collaborative work from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and Govinda Gallery, and is sponsored by HISTORYTM.
