When you go into a family business it's good to know that you have other talented family members to promote and develop your business. Belinda, one of the owners of the Eltham Tea House, was previously a graphic designer. Her dad was a builder so he could renovate the café. As a family they have been involved in other businesses but this one was a much bigger venture.



You will find them just across the road from the Eltham little trains, walking tracks and park. My young daughter had been there for breakfast with a friend and had been raving about it ever since. So when we had been bike riding in the area she insisted that we drop in for a drink and a snack.



It was after four o'clock on a Sunday afternoon so I thought we might have missed out. Most local cafés are shut by this time but the Eltham Teahouse car park was full. The outside seating was particularly popular on this beautiful sunny day. The café caters for dogs and many were sunning themselves next to their owners who were enjoying their afternoon tea.



This is a licensed cafe with a huge selection of refreshments including loose leaf tea by the famous French Tea House Mariage Freres ($4.50) and Veneziano Coffee "Estate Blend" made by experienced Baristas using an impressive yellow La Marzocco espresso machine. For sweet tooths, try the hot chocolate by Grounded Pleasures complete with handmade marshmallows.



Devonshire Tea is available every day or choose from a large selection of cakes, slices, biscuits, chocolates or macarons.There is a range of special juices, shakes and iced drinks or smoothies . But how can go past the many gelato flavors? I loved the mint but bubblegum, strawberry, mango and lemon are the most popular.



The Eltham Tea House serves all day brekky until 3 o'clock. A big breakfast will cost you $21.50 or toast $6. Kidlet's (under 12yrs) can have a breakfast for $10.

For lunch you might like a pumpkin pita pizza for $15.50 or vegetarian frittata for $16.50. An open lamb souvlaki will cost you $21.50 or perhaps pick a salt and pepper calamari which looked delicious for $21.50.

I love a café that has gifts. The Tea House stock beautiful candles, soaps, moisturizes, jewelry, vases, picture frames, clocks, ornaments, glassware, dressing gowns, cushions and much more. They also gift wrap.



I need to make special mention of the very friendly staff at the Eltham Tea House. It's quite unusual when each staff member greets you with a smile and as we left two people said goodbye. I thought, with a smile, that they seemed equally pleased to see us arrive as they did to see us leave.

I am keen to return to the Eltham Tea House for their high tea. These are held on the first Sunday of every month or private high teas can be arranged on your preferred date (minimum of 10 guests). The high tea includes assorted sandwiches including my favorite smoked salmon, goat cheese, turkey and cranberry. Savory tartlets, lemon scones with raspberry jam and Chantilly cream, petit fours including cakes and macaroons and chocolates are all part of this decadent high tea. Unlimited tea, coffee, iced tea or French lemonade are served for the duration of the high tea.

The high tea can be modified for a gluten-free option. The price for this luxury high tea is $55 or $60 per person for a glass of bubbly on arrival.



Simply named Eltham Tea House, this French inspired cafe has top class service, a tempting menu and a lovely ambience. Consider spoiling yourself with a high tea. I'll see you there.
