It seems like you blink, and a new eatery has opened in Surfers Paradise - a result of the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games perhaps? Whatever it is, I am delighted for any new restaurants that are a step above the fried and fast food places, the bars with pokies or surf clubs. Not that there is anything wrong with those, but, I believe it is important for an area to have a variety of places that cater for different moods, people and occasions.

The newest offering is Elston, the latest addition to the marvellous Soul Complex, in the heart of Surfers Paradise offering coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails, all served with a side of stunning beachfront views. It is open from 7am to 12am 7 days a week.

The name Elston, is taken from what the city of Surfers Paradise was called, before it was re-established in 1933 to what we know today.

I went for Sunday lunch recently and I was very impressed, it's slightly more expensive than other places you could go locally, but the view, service and quality of the food is worth an extra couple of dollars, in my opinion. It was $64 for two people with 3 drinks and 2 mains - so it's not something we would do each week but certainly for a special occasion. Coffee though is very reasonable, being $4 for a regular and $5 for a large size.

The menu is rustic and simple with basic menu sections including starters, burgers and sandwiches, salads, share plates and everything else - which consists of fish, chicken, pasta etc. They also have an extensive drinks menu, which consists of all beers, wine, spirits and cocktails plus soft drinks and coffees.

The food was cooked brilliantly and tasted great, and even though it was busy, it didn't take too long to come out, around 20 minutes, so long enough enjoy a drink - plus I am always slightly sceptical when food comes out too quick - but not an eternity. I had the BBQ Chicken Burger and Fries ($16), and my boyfriend had Blackened Angus Steak with Chunky Chips and Salad ($22). Both were really tasty and we certainly didn't leave anything.

The food presentation was good too, although what is this fascination nowadays with serving food on chopping boards; when did plates go out of fashion? Anyway, it looked and tasted good, which is the main thing, and from what I could see and conversations I could overhear on other tables, the general consensus was pleasantly full and satisfied.

Their website is still in production, but Facebook has some photos of their breakfasts and they look really good, such as the Hash Brown Stack or Smashed Avocado. Check out their page to see for yourself and get updates and latest offers. I shall be heading there soon to try breakfast and soak up those views - an awesome way to start the day.

The decor, and inside and outdoor seating allows for a day to night feel, as the decking seating is perfect for coffee, breakfast and lunch and the inside with its large sofas, high bar seats and dim hanging spot lights are perfect for a nighttime occasion of dinner and cocktails. It isn't easy for a place to offer everything and transition so well, but I believe this place certainly could. I am looking forward to returning for a date night and trying some of those cocktails.

Each table was busy and varied from families, mates, couples and parties. There was a group of little girls who had chosen a cupcake each from the cake cabinet whilst their mother had a coffee, there were a group of mates trying out the cocktails and share plates and people like us, with babies having lunch.

Service was good, attentive and friendly and although they bought the wrong drink, they changed it within minutes and apologised for the mistake. Our waiter was great, and extremely handsome, I'm not sure my boyfriend fell for my claims of "research" when he caught me looking at him. Oops.

Located in the Soul Building, On the Esplanade in Surfers Paradise, head down Cavil Avenue towards the beach and turn left at McDonalds. It is certainly worth trying out if you want something lovely to eat or drink, by the beach
