Ellery Creek Big Hole is a spectacular waterhole that encompasses the perfect balance of water and geological rock formations that have occurred over the millennia.

It is a great spot for travelers and tourists to stop and adore at the beauty of untouched nature. It serves as a place where people can camp, host a picnic and use the crystal-clear waters from Ellery Creek as a means of having a refreshing swim.

Ellery Creek Big Hole is a tourist attraction that you should absolutely visit during your travels to the Northern Territory.

It is easily accessible by foot and has a paved path for wheelchair access. It is a short walk (around 50m) from the car park.

Known as the Water of Life, the waters of Ellery Creek are perfect for swimming (especially during the warmer weather) and serves as a vital resource of sustenance. This permanent waterhole is ringed by large River Red Gums and reed beds.

The water at the Big Hole are extremely deep and has been measured at 28m in certain parts.

I was unable to make the signature jump into the Hole due to being too short to reach the rocks. However, my partner challenged himself and picked a spot from where he was sure he wouldn't hit any rocks. This is essential in planning your jump, because the depth of the rocks aren't evenly spread out. He found it exhilarating and felt a strong adrenalin rush after this amazing experience.

Due to the depth of the Big Hole, the temperature of the water can be very low and can be hazardous. When swimming, it is best to stay in the shallow edges of the waterhole until you are used to the temperature and then make your way out to the deep sections.

It is not a good idea to jump, dive or swing into the water as you risk contracting hypothermia.

Here are some essential items you should ideally carry when planning your trip to Ellery Creek Big Hole:

Lots of sunscreen
Bathers
Aeroguard insect repellant spray
A big summery hat
Thongs and shoes
Some snacks/food
Plenty of water
A great sense of adventure!
