Established in 1924, Ellalong Hotel is an icon of rural life in the Hunter Valley. Located at 80 Helena Street, the hotel is the centre of the community in the serene, laid back village of Ellalong, which is part of the Cessnock local government area. Interestingly, despite its rural location, Ellalong Hotel sees plenty of vehicular traffic by its doorstep.
Ellalong Hotel is not known for its hotel business. It is known for the pub and bistro, and the view of the Watagan Mountains and the Ellalong Lagoon. Its menu includes typical pub food chips and nachos, a variety of burgers (Schnitzel, southern fried chicken, a house one and another they call Punchy), light meals (spicy chicken, salt and pepper squid, salads), different kinds of pizza (margarita, Hawaiian, meat lovers, Big Mumma, supreme, vegetarian or vegan), and mains such as rump steak, battered or grilled barramundi, chicken schnitzel, fresh roast with gravy, spaghetti bolognese, fettuccine carbonara, Scotch fillet, grilled chicken, lamb cutlets, pork belly, and a mixed grill called Vegan Nightmare). There's a kid's menu too. Prices range from the $5 serving of chips to the high end of $38 for the mixed grill.
There is a Friday Night raffle of meat trays, locals join the lucky pick for community fundraisers. You don't even have to be present if you were to be the winner.
The Ellalong Hotel is the only prominent business establishment in the village of Ellalong in the Hunter Valley.
