Being British, I love visiting those very-English style pubs that are dotted throughout Perth. You know the ones – dingy lighting, wooden beams, exposed brick and the smell of mulled wine wafting through the air.

The Elizabethan Village Pub in the stunning Bedfordale hills has all of the above, along with a quirky fondness for beer coasters covering the wooden beams. The exterior is a gorgeous Tudor-style, black and white façade.

Visiting for lunch, we chose a booth inside with our toddler and newborn – there was plenty of space to park the pram and there are high chairs available. There are two parts to the restaurant – the casual, very English pub-style area with a bar, plus a more formal dining area to the right of the entrance.

There is also a courtyard at the back of the restaurant plus a small outdoor dining area at the front.

Table service isn't available in the 'pub' and you need to order at the bar. We were lucky to get in and place our order when we did, as shortly after, a large line of people waiting to order had formed.

The menu is a bit of a hybrid of English grub such as pie and chips, along with Australian favourites that include steaks, seafood and parmis, plus international-inspired dishes.

Between the three adults we ordered two beef pies and the chicken parmigiana, plus soft drinks all round. There was a slight wait for the food to be brought out, but nothing to complain about.

I certainly love a good pie, especially topped with beautiful puff pastry and cooked to perfection. The beef filling was absolutely divine, with plenty of gravy and vegetables. The mash was creamy and delicious and the vegetables just crunchy enough.

The parmigiana was tender and juicy but crunchy on the outside, just the way it should be, with a rich napolitana sauce and tasty cheese. The serving sizes are huge, but I managed to polish most of mine off. What can I say, I hate to waste!

You will find a range of craft beer on tap, including the pub's own pilsners and stouts, plus cocktails and an extensive wine list. They have weekend specials and desserts, plus a couple of options for the kids.

If you're into English-style pubs, craft beer and great food, this is one for the to-do list. It's a world away from the city, and well worth the drive out to the Bedfordale hills.
