Elegance: Inspiring, Graceful Dance

In Elegance , Li Cuncin brings together four diverse experiences in an evening of wonder and delight.

Ershter Vals, we are told, "pays tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. Created by US-based choreographer and Principal Dancer Ma Cong, it is performed to music from the Jewish ghettos of World War II". This was moving and beautiful – but sur-titles might have better enabled us to follow the themes.

Rachmaninoff comes next, as the music for Ben Stevenson's Three Preludes. Two dancers fall in love, and we experience the growing depth of their relationship in their magical dance.
Verdi's Variations allows the dancers to showcase their talents. On display are "virtuosic solos, dazzling pas de deux and ensembles".

These three performances are impressive – marrying evocative music with flawless dance. Yet it is in the final performance that the evening rises to another level.

In a new ballet from Brisbane-based dancer and choreographer Gareth Belling, the dancers communicate beyond the "fourth wall" and display not only their virtuosity but also a sense of fun, as they vamp their determination to milk the applause for themselves, and display joy in their own skills, and petulance at being up-staged.

Sweet Beginnings is danced to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, performed brilliantly by the Brisbane chamber ensemble, Collusion. Once again we celebrate the creativity and innovation of Queensland Ballet's Artistic Director Li Cunxin.
