#43 ; MSO
Uplifting and joyous - we need more gorgeous collaborations and good vibes like this in the world!
When was the last time you got up out of your seat and danced with joy? For me, it was on Thursday night with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO)! Yes, you absolutely read that right - but it wasn't the MSO alone that got me and other patrons up and grooving...
As part of their NAIDOC Week celebrations, electronic music duo ELECTRIC FIELDS were invited to perform some of their pop, soul and electronica sounds in collaboration with the orchestra for one night only - and the results were truly magical!
As soon as Zaachariaha stepped out on the stage in a flowing metallic silver gown, I knew I was in for a treat... I'd listened to their music before so I was prepared for Zaachariaha's extraordinary vocals accompanied by Michael Ross on the keyboard (although I can now confirm they are 100 x better live!) but the magic truly happened when the orchestra joined in.
I remember smiling to myself, noticing everyone swaying and clapping along in their seats, me included, but I was not expecting everyone to spontaneous decide; 'f#*k it' and just stand up and dance. Such beautiful sounds and a soul-nourishing experience - a moment of pure joy and freedom of self-expression... That's the magic of music!!
I can't imagine the work that was involved for the MSO's 2022 Cybec Young Composer in Residence Alex Turley, to arrange the pop songs for orchestra, but my word - I think he did a fabulous job! And of course, they had a wonderful and perfectly suited conductor, Aaron Wyatt - an accomplished violinist, who is also the director of Ensemble Dutala - Australia's first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander chamber ensemble!
Supported by Antara Singers; Audrey Umala, Sandra Pumani, Zaavan Fielding and gorgeous guest vocalists, a mesmerising light show and backdrop of images and digital art - this was one incredible performance celebrating Australian music and culture...Described as 'Daft Punk meets Nina Simone in the Deep Forest', ELECTRIC FIELDS combines modern pop music with intimate storytelling, with lyrics sung in English as well as the traditional languages of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara people. This was ELECTRIC FIELDS debut concert with the MSO but I'm sure it won't be their last... and I am honoured and blessed to have had the opportunity to experience this uplifting performance for NAIDOC Week.A magical electric-soul and classical fusion I won't forget!
