Elara Black: Hold On is a brave foray into it s premiere cabaret performance. This is a story about Elara the cabaret singer who delves into a lifetime of decisions and choices she made. Each chapter of the story is punctuated by some amazing vocals and a suite of original music. Of the 12 songs performed, 10 of them were written by this young songstress with a stunning voice reminiscent of the quirky Regina Spektor.
We've all been there. Making choices and lifetime decisions that we look back at in hindsight and either relish or regret those moments. Elara is no different as she reminisces choosing between a career and a lover, to follow her artistic once in a lifetime dream or to settle for emotional fulfilment. All this while entertaining us with her cabaret dance and singing performances in the telling of the tale.
Accompanied by a piano, it's keys tinkled by Elara herself, there's no place to hide vocally, and rise to the occasion she does. At one point singing a song with no musical accompaniment at all other than a snapping of the fingers and a tapping of the toes, there's no doubt this young lady is vocally strong and a pleasure to listen to. I especially enjoyed the little dance she does as she pensively dwells upon the decisions she made. I felt the dance added to the moment, giving impact to a memory in time, laced with sadness.
Elara is a Melburnian singer-songwriter-pianist and sometimes violinist influenced by jazz, pop, acoustic sounds and a dash of cabaret. She's always performed as a singer and thanks to her sweet sound, she can easily be forgiven that her first night of the premiere show needed a slight bit of tweaking. A tiny nervous habit she vows to watch out for, made it a little distracting at times for me and the lighting could have done with a bit of 'less is more' given the sparse stage. This again is in the works of being adjusted. This does not detract from the fact that this rather talented young lady will keep you entertained during her nearly hour long show.
