"Best Mexican Food in Sydney" - tequila, tacos and crickets
So it fell to me to organise a work dinner that could somehow combine great food with tequila. Of course, the obvious decision was Mexican. But where? I was looking for something in the Eastern Suburbs as that is where we all mostly reside. And, in my searches, I stumbled upon a few reviews for the restaurant: El Topo.

El Topo is apparently famous in the restaurant review world, receiving compliments and respects from a number of critics - not an easy feat. Their website also claims to have the "Best Mexican Food in Sydney". I can't say I've experienced a lot of Mexican restaurants in the city but it sure was tasty.

El Topo is found above the Eastern Hotel, at Bondi Junction; technically a part of the Westfield (500 Oxford Street). Not only does the menu consist of over 3 pages dedicated to different types of tequila and cocktails but there is also fried crickets to get your tastebuds going! The food is a modern take on Mexican, mixing traditional flavours with new and eclectic combinations. For example: I ordered the Chorizo Con Huevo Y Papas Jalapeņo, described simply as: "Chorizo, Slow Cooked Egg, Potato, Turtle Bean & Jalapeņo". I expected some chorizo sausage with a fried egg on top and some vegetables on the side. It seemed at first that someone had poured a packet of potato crisps and minced beef onto my plate by mistake and dabbed some black paste on the side for good measure. But I was pleasantly surprised by the amalgamation of flavours. This meal was a fascinating compilation of minced chorizo meat, crisp potato chips, creamed turtle bean paste (a black substance I was initially wary of but the flavour was incredible!) and the softest, runniest egg I have ever tasted. This strange assortment worked brilliantly together.

The consensus was mutual: the food was amazing. And, while a little pricey, the cocktails went down a treat. Not only did they have classic margaritas but also a delicious combination of tequila, cider and elderflower juice, amongst many others.

And I haven't even gotten to the decor yet! After stumbling confusedly through The Eastern and almost getting lost in the elevator (if that's possible), we stumbled into the world of Mexican. We were overwhelmed by the splash of colour everywhere you look; a mosaic of pastel pinks and yellows. The tables were tiled and the outdoor seating had an open roof for the view of the stars.

Some of the two-person tables could be considered extremely romantic, illuminated by candle light with the stars shining overhead. On the other hand, they were able to cater to a group as large as 15; so there is no booking these guys can't handle. They offer function menus or you can go for the al-a-carte option. Either way, you're sure to enjoy yourself. El Topo is a great way to enjoy Mexican with more class than you would have thought possible.
