El Jannah at 156-158 King Street, Newtown is a relatively new and welcome addition to the King Street, Newtown restaurant scene. Budget-priced establishments have become increasingly thin on the ground and this place provides quality food that is nothing fancy at a reasonable price.
El Jannah specialises in chicken and the chicken used is particularly succulent.
The menu has a variety of different portion sizes that you can get as a 'plate' (which includes two pieces of Lebanese bread, a small pot of pickles and a pot of garlic sauce) or as a meal (which includes chips and drink). Sadly, as is usually the case in Australia, the chips are not made from freshly cut potatoes, but rather appear to be frozen. The half chicken 'plate' option for $13.50 is recommended, even though it is difficult to see how a $6 increase over the cost of just the half chicken on its own at $7.50 is worth a couple of pieces of Lebanese bread, some pickles and some garlic sauce, but it does turn an otherwise bland option into a more interesting one. The chickens are smaller than those used in some other places (e.g. Chargrill Charlies), so the half chicken meal size is likely to be about the right size for a hungry individual with a reasonable appetite.
You can also buy pieces of drumsticks, wings and tenders and burgers as either a meal with chips and drink or on their own. The restaurant has limited seating and is very popular, so you may not be able to find available seating to eat in.
Note that El Jannah has restaurants scattered around Sydney, so you may be able to find one in your area.
