The famous Ekka strawberry ice-creams would not be silenced by COVID-19 with the creation of a drive-through pop-up station at the RNA Brisbane Showgrounds.

The Government imposed shutdown of the Royal National Association (RNA) Ekka for the second year in a row meant that the scream of rides, getting up close with the animal displays and judging competitions of Queensland's produce and of course, the Pavilion filled with show bags, was not able to be enjoyed by visitors to the show.

But the resilient folks at The Common Good made sure that visitors didn't need to miss out on one of the show's magnificent standouts. That's right, The famous Strawberry Sundae.

If you are new to the Ekka caper, you might not know that The Ekka Strawberry Sundae is part of Ekka folklore. The Strawberry Sundaes first made their appearance at the Ekka in the 1950s.

Let me describe it to you. The foundation is a crispy ice-cream cone filled with fresh luscious strawberries on the base, followed by a layer of creamy strawberry ice cream, a dollop of cream and finished with another fresh strawberry on top. These ice-creams are sublime and a decadent rarity.

Rather than miss out, the committed team from The Common Good set up a drive-through station on the grounds of the Ekka where ice-cream addicts could slip through the gates and safely purchase the dessert from their car.

Entry was via O'Connell Terrace in Bowen Hills and the creamy delights were available from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 14 August 2021. It is quite a windy drive through the showgrounds to reach the Showbag Pavillion where the ice-creams are waiting. The set-up ensured that the cars passed freely and there was no wait time. Simple drive up to the cashier, place your order and pick up the creamy bundles of gorgeousness.

The ice creams were a reasonable $5.50 each. The good news is that RACQ members receive a 50 cent discount on every purchase which was a pleasant surprise.

To round off the Ekka eating experience, there were a couple of staple favourites also on offer. Visitors could also purchase Hot Chips, Dagwood Dogs, and Bertie Beetle Show Bags to take home. Bonus.

Funds raised from the sale of the ice-creams go to The Common Good. The Common Good is a for-purpose charity of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation (TPCHF) dedicated to funding medical discoveries through research to find new cures, using the power of the crowd to bring new treatments and new hope to those who need them, one medical discovery at a time.

Every 8 Strawberry Sundaes sold funds 1 hour of medical research. It was an inventive and accessible business response to the shutdown to allow the show to go on at least for the Strawberry Sundaes.

Get your little slice of the 2021 Ekka with a Common Good Strawberry Sundae. The drive-through pop-up station will be open from 14 to 22 August 2021.

If you missed out don't fear, The Common Good is partnering with Door Dash and is providing DIY home packs where you can make your own sweet strawberry creations in the comfort of your kitchen.
