Ekka normally spells the end of Winter 'unofficially' in Brisbane. Ok, so we have to get through some serious winds first, but then, it's all down hill from here to Spring!

This Wednesday, 12th August is a public 'happy hump' holiday in Brisbane central. So for the families that do not wish to empty their bank accounts on one day at the Ekka, here are some fun and fabulous (and did I mention cheap?) ideas to do on Wednesday with the family:

#1 : Grab a picnic blanket, some delicious BBQ food, refreshments and head to Simpson Falls walk at Mt Cootha. It has a wonderful picnic and BBQ area at the beginning of the track which is an easy 650m walk up to the falls area. The BBQ area is fabulous with wood fired BBQ's, plenty of seating, shade and you can even bring your furry pets!

#2 : Why not have a BBQ at home and hire a cheap jumping castle for the day? It keeps the kids entertained, active and outdoors, and the parents to BBQ, enjoy a few drinks, catch up and relax. Jumpin' Around are a locally owned Brisbane business who have some fabulous deals for the Ekka holiday.

#3 : Take a drive out of the city down to the Spit at the Gold Coast. This part of the Goldie is a haven and oasis for those who have visited before. Even better, as it's a Brisbane only holiday, this part of the country should be fairly quiet mid-week. You can bring the dog, set up a picnic and let the kids frolic in the very calm waters overlooking Southport.

#4 : Head out to Sirromet Winery - Brisbane's best vineyard. A gorgeous winery located at Mt Cotton with a variety of eating pleasures (high end to the relaxed wood fired pizzas). The kids will love watching the local kangaroos bounce around the fields. Take a detour via Victoria Point on your way home - a stunning little part of the world with its clear, calm water, bobbing boats and local cafes.

#5 : And lastly (but certainly not least) head to Cineplex - Brisbane's cheapest movie theatre chain. Kids will love relaxing mid week watching a flick with $2 popcorn and a slushie.

A mid week break is perfect to relax, unwind and recalibrate. And best of all .. leaves only 2 more days to go until the weekend ... ENJOY!
