When we visited the Ekhidna for the first time it was only a small cellar door in McLaren Vale. It was pure coincidence, because we had never heard anything about this winery before. The special name of the winery caught our eye when we drove past and we wondered what was behind it. Ekhidna means "she viper" and comes from the Greek mythology.

We loved this place from the beginning and had the luck to meet the winemaker Matt himself. The range of the wines was small at this time but all of them were handcrafted and well balanced. A year later, our paths crossed again and we were surprised, because the cellar door was expanded to a restaurant and a brewery. We stopped immediately and tried to get a table for lunch. Since then we visit this fantastic place regularly and are never disappointed.

The Winery

The award-winning Ekhidna and Paper Eagle wines are available for tasting in the cozy cellar door. Matt, the winemaker, is almost always (if there is no work in the vineyard) at disposal and answers every question you have about wine growing and making. The range starts from sparkling and whites to roses and reds. His shiraz was awarded with a trophy for Australia's Best Shiraz.

The Brewery

But the cellar door of Ekhidna Wines not only offers a tasting of their excellent McLaren Vale wines, but also sensational handcrafted beers. The range is huge as they brew seven different beers. A flight of five of its magnificent beers from the entire range can be tasted. You pay only $5 for the flight ,but you get really enough beer for this price and it is worth the money.

The Restaurant

To complete the tasting of wine and beer, Ekhidna also is the perfect place to enjoy fabulous food. From tapas to an la carte meals, you will experience a wide range of local products which are prepared with care and love. The very friendly and professional service is an added bonus and compliments the great food experience.

The décor of the restaurant is as homey but stylish. You can choose from one of the tables in the restaurant, located on a large glass front with a fantastic view over the vineyards, or if you prefer a more casual option, you can sit at the beautiful bar tables and have your tapas and drinks. An alfresco area tops the fantastic place off.

The Specials

Every Friday from 4pm to 6pm is Happy Hour, where they offer their beers ($4 for a Glass, $12 for Jugs) and wines ($5 for a Glass, $19.95 for a Bottle) at a very special price.

Do not miss this fabulous place to enjoy a long lazy lunch or a fine dinner.
