Like them or love them, they are part of Aussie history.

There’s something very special happening at the Trafalgar Holden Museum this year. They are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the mighty EH Holden and they’re inviting you to join them. On the day visitors will be treated to Holden Heritage Displays, EH Displays and of course, everything else the museum has to offer. This is a great opportunity for those of us who were about at the time to reminisce and for the younger generations to see what their grandparents were driving - vehicles with distinctive lines, large steering wheels and bench seats.

The iconic EH Holden was produced from 1963 to 1965 and more than 256,000 were sold. The model was preceded by the EJ and replaced by the ED. It could be bought as a sedan, a station wagon, a panel van or a ute, and of course, there were special editions.

Holden’s Impressive History. Did you know that Holden was founded in 1856 in Adelaide? Some of you will be shouting at your screens, telling me that can’t be. There were no cars in 1856! But back then, Holden was a saddlery manufacturer. There you go, Holden was always in the transport industry. They moved on to motor cars in 1908. The company became a subsidiary of the USA-based General Motors in 1931 and continued in Australia until 2020. By the time they closed, they had made nearly 7.7 million vehicles.

The Trafalgar Holden Museum, is volunteer run. Housed in an old dairy factory, it was opened in 2014. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of these quintessentially Aussie cars and to celebrating and preserving Australia’s Holden heritage. Exhibits are rotated every three months, in addition to the permanent displays.

Visitors can expect to see:

Red Car on a Pole. Trafalgar is an easy day trip from Melbourne and you can’t miss the museum once you get to town because there’s a Red VE Holden Commodore mounted high on a pole out front. The ‘Red Car on a Pole’ is visible from the Princes Highway.
