Is your kid fascinated with Ancient Egypt? Do they like pottery? To coincide with the spectacular special exhibition, Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs , the Australian Museum is hosting a range of activities throughout the January school holidays for children of all ages to enjoy at the museum.

First up is the Egyptian Pottery workshop , aimed at children aged 5 – 16. Over three two hour workshops, one for five to eight year olds, one for nine to twelve year olds, and another for thirteen to sixteen year olds, Tamara Gulic Phoenix – artist and art educator will guide children through the art and science of Egyptian pottery. The children who attend will get to find out about the intersection of art and history with a focus on the history of Egypt, and they will uncover the secrets of canopic jars and their significance, as well as the design evolution and purpose of these jars.

During this hands-on experience, children will get to create their own canopic jar from clay, and choose what will top their jar to make it fit for a pharaoh. Whether it is a falcon, a human, or a creature of their choice, children will then use paint to bring their masterpiece to life. Want more? Children will then get to explore hieroglyphic texts and write their name in hieroglyphs – what fun!

Finally, the children attending these workshops will step into the shoes of an ancient Egyptian sculptor so they can learn about the importance of the canopic jars in the afterlife. Come to this educational and inspiring workshop where you get to create art to take home.

The workshop will be held in the Lower Ground Patricia McDonald Education Rooms, and times are:

9th of January 2024 10am-12pm – 5- 8-year-olds
9th January 2024 1.30pm – 3.30pm – 9-12-year-olds
10th January 2024 1.30pm-3.30pm – 13–16-year-olds.

Taking part in this workshop will cost $52 for members, and $65 for non-members with Creative Kids Vouchers accepted.

If you can, incorporate this with a visit to the Ramses exhibit to gain a full understanding of the importance of these jars to the pharaoh.
