With the proposed tidal pool at Hallett Cove still on the drawing board and the historic Henley Beach tidal pool demolished some time ago, where else can you find such a swimming area on South Australia's foreshore? Well, the answer is Edithburgh , a delightful coastal town approximately 230 kilometres from Adelaide.

Edithburgh tidal pool can be found on the northern side of the jetty. Originally built for men in the early 1900s (as the ladies already had their own further south), the pool is now open to everyone and provides children with a safe place to swim. Sea water fills the pool as the tide comes in. And, as the tide ebbs, the pool is left with about a metre-deep of water. You'll be protected from the waves swimming here. However, do be mindful of all the concrete steps leading in to and out from the pool. Younger children will surely need to be supervised.

The pool has undergone many facelifts, with one of the latest being a mural painted by local artist Darryl and Andrew Lewis. The mural surrounds the pool and depicts both the region's marine and bird life. You'll notice a lot of handprints on the mural too. These impressions are from the hands of students from two local schools.

We were at the pool a few weeks ago and had it all pretty much to ourselves. Only one other person joined us part way through. Although great in any weather condition, I guess it'll prove to be more of a hit during the summer months. The pool is decked out with barbecue facilities, picnic areas and toilets. And, there are plenty of parking spaces nearby as well.

Located along O'Halloran Parade, this unique seawater basin is free for all to enjoy. Other free attractions in Edithburgh include its popular jetty, fascinating wind farm , impressive mosaic trail , stunning water tower artwork and beautiful native flora reserve. So, do consider staying a night or two next time you're planning a visit to the Yorke Peninsula.
