The Edge Skatepark, Kwinana

It was a beautiful, warm and sunny spring day as my best friend, her kids and mine set off on an adventure to the brand new skate park off Gilmore Ave in Kwinana known as
The Edge Skate Park! The parking off Gilmore Ave is a bit sparse, but parking on the verge was good enough for Mel, as I have ACROD (due to lower back injury) so parked closer to the action. There was a lot of kids, parents, picnics and orange cones when we showed up as there was a skateboard/scooter clinic going on until midday. So the kids could only use the beginners track closest to our parking, but that was perfectly fine with us!
The bitumen is already blackened by tire marks from scooters, bikes and skateboards with kids of all ages from 3 to 53 enjoying the half bowls, ramps, bars, mole hills and pipes that officially opened on Saturday 7th October 2017. The Edge Skatepark includes competition-level bowl, beginners area, street area, jumps run, half pipe, parkour area, bike and skateboard repair station, basketball half court; phone charging stations, free Wi-Fi, drink fountains, bins, lighting, seating and a shelter which my son (9) tried out most of these things and gives it a 5/10 as he believes they need a shallower children's bowl!
As this skate park is only a temporary fixture until the new Youth Centre is built, I believe Kwinana is on the right track with listening to the youth of today and finding out what they need for entertainment. So great work Town of Kwinana.
The Edge Skate park is open to the public during daylight hours and evenings until 10pm. User-operated lights can be turned on by pressing a button located on a white pole near the basketball court. These lights are programmed to turn off after 30 minutes, with a warning siren five minute prior. &
#8203 ;Lights can be accessed until 10pm. Which is a genius idea! (I wish all parks had this feature). The Edge Skate park is well-serviced by public transport, with buses 540, 541 and 549 stopping nearby. There are food vendors like McDonalds, Red Rooster and KFC across the Ave at Kwinana Hub Shopping Centre. And the
#1 WA Best Adventure Park - Kwinana Adventure Park just across adjoining Calista Oval. It is a fantastic day out anytime and you can bring your own food and drinks or pop across the road and get a treat. We will definitely be back for more soon and hope to see you there too.
