Parents, we get it. You love animals, love your kids, and wish to nurture some beautiful connections between your little ones and the animals we share the planet with. You'd also like an alternative to traditional zoos? Fortunately, a whimsical little farm tucked away in the geographic centre of Victoria fits the bill!

Edgar's Mission is a not-for-profit sanctuary operating in Lancefield, approximately 70km from Melbourne's CBD. It sprawls across 153 acres and is home to over 450 rescued animals. Each feathery, furry resident has their own unique back story, as these adorable, lucky critters have found themselves living the dream after a shaky and sometimes tragic start to life. At Edgar's, you will meet and interact with pigs, chickens, goats, cows, miniature horses, ducks and rabbits as they merrily go about their daily lives in generous open spaces.



Down on the Farm "Cluckingham Palace" is a must-see attraction, a picture-perfect paddock of rainbow-coloured chicken mansions and a plethora of space for broody chooks to do what comes naturally to them – scratch, dust-bathe, roam and explore. It's a great way to show kids and adults that their feathered friends have likes and dislikes just like we do, and need plenty of space to display their little personalities. Adorability factor: 10/10.

Interaction with the animals is encouraged on their terms, and one of the great delights on the farm has to be feeding time in the sheep paddock, where guests are surrounded by a boisterous flock of bleating Weetbix enthusiasts, ready to accept a tasty morsel from their bemused visitors!



Tour guides eagerly accompany each group of visitors, only too happy to talk about the individuals in Edgar's care. Armed with a wealth of knowledge, their duty is to promote compassion, respect and humane treatment of all animals. Questions are encouraged, especially those from curious, young minds!

The farm is peppered with a variety of feel-good quotes displayed along walls and fastened to posts, emphasising that at Edgar's, their mission is kindness. A wonderful message for young hearts. A modest gift shop awaits at the end of the tour with a range of ethically-sourced goods and handmade crafts.
